About Random Animal
Random Animal introduces you to one creature at a time, from familiar pets and farm animals to deep-sea oddities, with its scientific name, habitat, where in the world it lives, and one interesting fact.
It's popular for drawing prompts, classroom warm-ups, pictionary and charades, and simply learning something new. Filter by animal group to focus on mammals, birds, reptiles and more.
Ideas
- Drawing prompt: draw whatever comes up in five minutes.
- Charades: act out the animal without sounds.
How it works
The pool holds 260 animals. Each press picks one uniformly at random with your browser's cryptographic random number generator (the Web Crypto API), so every animal is equally likely, and the same one is never shown twice in a row.
The list is fetched once — only when you first press the button — and cached, so every pick after that is instant.
Without JavaScript the button still works: it asks our server for a pick instead.
