Random Song picks a track from a curated list of influential and much-loved songs across pop, rock, hip-hop, soul, jazz, electronic, country and music from around the world, from the 1930s to today.
Each pick shows the artist, year and genre — search for it on whatever service you use. Filter by decade for a nostalgia trip or by genre to explore something unfamiliar.
Ideas
- Build a playlist: press ten times and add every pick.
- Music quiz: read the title aloud and have friends guess the year.
- Filter to a genre you never listen to — that's the point.
How it works
The pool holds 499 songs. Each press picks one uniformly at random with your browser's cryptographic random number generator (the Web Crypto API), so every song is equally likely, and the same one is never shown twice in a row.
Picks are served in small batches from the network edge, so your browser never downloads the whole list.
Without JavaScript the button still works: it asks our server for a pick instead.
