- 450 g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 400 ml buttermilk
- Method
- Heat the oven to 200 °C (400 °F) and dust a baking tray with flour.
- Mix the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt in a large bowl.
- Pour in the buttermilk and mix quickly with a fork to a soft, slightly sticky dough.
- Shape into a round about 4 cm high on the tray and cut a deep cross into the top.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes until it sounds hollow when tapped underneath. Cool on a rack under a tea towel.
